The Speakeasy Between the Pages

What if I told you, in the heart of Rochester, a piece of the Prohibition era lived?

Vanni’s Jazz Lounge is an addition to the Inn on Broadway. This place is perfect for a date night, a girls-get-away or even just a drink with friends.

When you reach the floor to ceiling bookcase, know that not everything worthwhile will be found quickly, the best things prefer to be discovered. While I will not give how to get in, just know this place does everything by-the-book!

I went recently on a double date, not knowing fully what to expect. But I immediately went from apprehension to excitement the moment I entered. It is an amazing experience right from the first step. The first thing that hits you is the gentle jazz drifting down the hall. You are immediately immersed. Once your eyes adjust to the candle-lit room, the city fades away and you feel like you’ve entered into a story-worthy world.

The seating is intimate but perfect for truly listening to music with a cocktail. This place truly encapsulates the art of a true night-out-on-the-town.

The bartenders and waiters were really kind and helpful, they were very knowledgeable and helped us each find a drink we loved. They off creative flavor combinations, each with unique bookish themed names. They honor classic drinks but add their own signature spin so they truly have something for everyone. Someone can choose from “Plot Twist” – Old Fashioned with aged tequila, to “Finish the Chapter” – a take on an espresso martini, to “Author’s Note” – a passion-fruit inspired Paloma, and many, many more unique and delicious options. They also offer many on-tap drinks and many mocktail options that give you the same elevated experience, without the buzz.

Their menu features small bites and they can satisfy a small dinner or the perfect little late-night snack. From bruschetta to tacos to boneless bites, they had a good selection of food to choose from. What I loved most was their options for those with a sweet tooth. Vanni’s offers everything from crème brûlée to the classic duo of milk and cookies.

Their live music is such a vital part of Vanni’s Lounge. Each night they have two artists split the evening and fill the space with the warmth of jazz. Their music is specially curated for their space. It works to make the artist the center of attention as much as possible. Guests can experience the music, rather than just being background noise. Vanni’s food and drink along with their music makes you want to be unhurried, to take your time and soak it all in.

There are no reservations required and they are open Thursdays through Saturdays from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m. I encourage you to take the adventure and go find Vanni’s Jazz Lounge. Use it as a point to slow down and feel the music. Be sure to remember that hidden gems like to stay hidden, so don’t go revealing all their secrets. Let others venture into solving the mystery themselves!
