fivebyfive, Rochester’s unique chamber ensemble, will be joined by ethomusicologist and banjo player, Emily Pinkerton to perform her latest composition, “Ephemera Ballads”. This piece is part of “Enduring Stories: ghosts, murder, & lost voices of the Appalachians and Catskills”
which takes inspiration from Pinkerton’s research into two women from the Hudson Valley in the 18th and 19th century. Pinkerton uses the rhythyms and rhymes from old “broadside ballads” to vividly trace their lives and move their stories from invisible to visible as well as ephemeral to enduring.
The five musicians and the audio/visual artist who make up fivebyfive, commissioned Pinkerton after successfully performing her “Rounder Songs” which sing of a gambler, a murderer, and a mill worker who strikes a deal with the devil. This second collaboration brings together old-time folk and classical styles, created for banjo, voice, fiddle, flute, clarinet, electric guitar, piano, and bass. Listeners should be ready to be transported to a time gone-by so come share the spirit!
