The Tale of the Mysterious Deer

Last week a friend emailed me a photo of an unusual-looking buck that he said was captured on a trail camera in the woods where he hunts deer in southern Livingston County. His question for me was, “Looks like a red deer. What do you think?” The deer in the photo was clearly not a whitetail and it did exhibit a reddish coloration that is different than the typical russet summer coats of our own native deer. Its antler formation was different as well. And it didn’t have a speck of white anywhere. He asked me not to disclose his identity or the location where the deer was photographed for privacy reasons, and so I won’t.
