Take a dusk walk with us to look and listen for one of Montezuma’s most interesting breeding birds! Mating season is beginning for the American Woodcock, who puts on a dizzying, aerial breeding display called the “sky dance”. The males call out “peent” before launching themselves into an erratic flight display to attract females. We will begin the walk at the building with a short presentation on the woodcock’s natural history, and then head out in search of their call and to hopefully catch this unique mating ritual. The walk will be approximately 1-mile in distance, along a relatively flat, grassy trail that will lead us through the grassland and around the marshes. Along the way, we’ll be looking and listening for not only woodcocks, but also any visiting waterfowl and spring peepers. Wear sturdy shoes that keep your feet warm and dry, dress for the weather, and bring a headlamp or flashlight for the return walk. You may also want to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on as we position ourselves in the open field to watch the display.
