The Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County (CAP) is proud to be a community partner in New York State’s Cultivating Havens for the Arts through Regional Murals (CHARM) program, a new initiative of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Over the last five months, CAP has partnered with Ithaca Murals (a project of the Center for Transformative Action) to bring 14 murals into fruition across the county. Together we organized 10 huge murals at SouthWorks and an enormous (50 foot tall!) mural for the Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) downtown in Ithaca as well as 3 murals in the rural areas outside of Ithaca – The Jane Minor BIPOC Community Garden in Danby, the Namaste Montessori School in Trumansburg, and a private residence in Caroline.
Megan Barber, Executive Director of the Community Arts Partnership, shares, “The Community Arts Partnership is grateful to the New York State Council on the Arts and the Office of the Governor for this infusion of resources into the artistic life of our community. It has been so exciting to see these formerly blank walls come alive with art!”
“Public art inspires and educates – it strengthens our civic pride and brings us together,” Governor Kathy Hochul said. “By supporting our innovative creative sector to work with communities all across the state, CHARM will reimagine everyday public spaces as vibrant destinations for visitors and residents alike.”
Please see below for details and images for all the CAP/Ithaca Murals administered murals created through the CHARM Initiative.
New York Mural Day is made possible by the NYSCA CHARM Initiative with the support of the Office of the Governor.
The Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County provides grants, services, and programs to artists and audiences. CAP connects artists and audiences through the Greater Ithaca Art Trail, Ithaca Artist Market, Spring Writes Literary Festival, and the CAP ArtSpace Gallery. CAP provides grants, a professional development workshop series, and other resources for artists. Over the last sixteen years, Ithaca Murals has helped spark more than 400 murals across our region—turning walls, barns, fences, underpasses, homes, and forgotten edges of our neighborhoods into a living, connected tapestry. What began with a handful of community dreamers has grown into one of the densest concentrations of public art in upstate New York, powered by people who believe creativity can build a better world.
