Why don’t we all get the same pleasure from the same types of wine? How can one species of grape (like Riesling) lead to so many delicious varieties of wine? Why can we detect apple, lemon, or pepper in something that is made from a grape? And what exactly *are* wine diamonds?!? With our NYK Beverage University Instructor and MCC Adjunct Chemistry Professor, Heather McKechney, we will discuss the science behind the answers to all these questions and more. Impress your friends and rule your favorite trivia night with your nerdy (but not too nerdy) tidbits of scientific wine knowledge!

Wines of Portugal
December 18 at 12pm
Perhaps you’ve seen the headlines about the incredible value and quality of Portuguese wines. The emerging region is thriving, with both consumers and critics singing it’s praises, but with over 250 indigenous grape varieties, it can be hard to know where to begin. And Portugal isn’t just Port, and Vinho Verde, but so much more. In fact, according to Wine Folly, “if you don’t recognize the grape variety on a Portuguese wine label, it’s a good thing.” Join our NYK Beverage University Instructor, Dr. Bruce Smoller, for a deep dive on the wines of Portugal. Together we’ll taste through five Portuguese wines paired with charcuterie. You’ll leave this class well versed in the region, and with a few new favorite bottles worth sharing with friends!
