“Sterling Nature Center: A Living History” to air Thursday June 20, 7 p.m.

It has been a great year for history at the Sterling Nature Center. The short film, “Sterling Nature Center: A Living History. How a Small Town Fought Back” premiered in March to a packed auditorium at SUNY Oswego.

Now it is coming home.

The SUNY Oswego student and faculty produced 15-minute documentary film will premiere locally on Thursday June 20th at 7 p.m. at the Sterling Nature Center’s new interpretive center. The film, originated by SUNY Professor and member of the Friends of the Sterling Nature Center board, Laura Donnelly, deals with the history of the formation of the center and includes interviews with a number of people involved over the years.

The June 20th event will feature a screening of the 15-minute film followed by a moderated Q&A panel discussion. The panel consists of the filmmakers, SUNY Oswego faculty; Tiffany Deater & Jarrod Hagadorn, and SUNY Oswego students; Lauren Smith, & Ryan King.  They will be joined by Friends; Charlie Itzin, June Ouellette, and Barbara Bartholomew, along with Jim D’Angelo, Sterling Nature Center Director.

The film, which was funded by a grant from the Shineman Endowed Fund, includes ample shots of the center’s spectacular nature as well as testimony on the 20-year fight to save the property from a number of proposals including a nuclear plant and a regional landfill.  Donnelly worked with fellow professors, Tiffany Deater and Jarrod Hagadorn, students Lauren Smith, Wells Liscombe, Ryan King and the center’s Volunteer Coordinator, Christine Engel, during the summer of 2023 to film and produce the short movie.

The film includes interviews with Sterling Town Historian, Susan Parsons, Center Director, Jim D’Angelo, Barbara Bartholomew, June Ouellette, and Charlie Itzin.  For more information call the center at 315-947-6143, email snc@cayugacounty.us or find us on Facebook.

If you are unable to make the June 20 showing, there will be others in the near future at the Sterling Nature Center, dates and times to be determined.
