Spring Awakening

story and photos by Cindy Ruggieri

Every year when I flip the calendar page to March, I smile. March is hopeful. The coldest weather is mostly behind us. Old Man Winter may still appear, but his days are numbered. And ever so slowly and gently, nature awakens from its long winter slumber. The sights and sounds of spring start to come alive.

Pink blooms abound

Suddenly there is a sheen of red or yellow on the trees as they start to bud. Crocus start to appear in the yard, followed by daffodils and tulips. The landscape changes from brown and gray to shades of pink blooms, green grass and blue sky. That first robin appears, and birds are singing and building their nests. Baby birds chirp for their dinner.

A frolicking spotted fawn and its mother wander through the backyard. There’s the patter of raindrops on the roof, a welcome relief from the cold wind of winter. Farmers start plowing their fields and gardeners start planning what they will grow.

Days are a bit longer and temperatures are a little higher. It’s pleasant enough to get outside and smell the fresh spring air. It’s joyful, motivating and hopeful. With winter in the rearview mirror, it’s time to celebrate spring’s awakening.
