Small Artwork from Near and Far

11/09/2023

This Saturday in Clifton Springs, November 11, Main Street Arts’ biggest show of the year will open with a public reception from 2 to 6 p.m. The tenth annual Small Works exhibition features 219 works of art by 204 artists from 29 states. Among the artists included in Small Works, 104 of them are local to the Finger Lakes and Western NY areas. The annual ‘Small Works’ is a national juried exhibition of artwork 12 inches or smaller and features a wide array of artistic styles, media, and subject matter.

“This being our tenth year as an organization and also the tenth year we’ve done Small Works, I wanted the exhibition to be special in some way. It was difficult to know what that meant, however. How can it be different? How to make it more special? The realization came as we were mid-way through the installation: The show itself is special! It is rare to see so many great artworks in one exhibition and one of the things I love most about Small Works is the way it brings so many different styles together.” — Bradley Butler, executive director and curator and Small Works exhibition juror

The opening reception will be held this Saturday, November 11, from 2 to 6 p.m. with award announcements at 4:30 p.m. Award announcements will also be streamed live on Facebook and Instagram at 4:30 p.m. EST

Also opening at Main Street Arts on Saturday is an exhibition in the Stairwell Gallery of photographs by Rochester-area photographer, Nancy Holowka. Nancy holds a Degree in Studio Art & Art History from Nazareth College. She is a co-founder of the Wildroot Gallery and has exhibited her work with Wildroot Group artists for 45 years. As a fine art photographer, Nancy exhibits her archival pigment prints in regional juried and invitational shows.

On-view at www.MainStreetArtsCS.org is this year’s The Cup, The Mug—an online invitational exhibition featuring cups and mugs from 25 ceramic artists from around the US. View the exhibition and learn more about each of the artists on the Main Street Arts website. Tune in to the Main Street Arts Facebook page each Tuesday in November at 7:30 p.m. for studio tour and artist talk events with artists from the exhibition.

Both Small Works and Nancy Holowka’s photography exhibition will run November 11–December 22. Gallery hours are Tuesday–Wednesday, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. and Thursday–Saturday, 11 a.m.–6 p.m. The Cup, The Mug will be viewable on the Main Street Arts website through December 2. Artwork in the exhibitions can be previewed and purchased at MainStreetArtsCS.org, where you will also find guest blog posts by selected artists from this year’s Small Works exhibition in Main Street Arts’ ‘Inside the Artist’s Studio’ feature.
