Show opens March 22, and two artists will offer demonstrations during its run
“Made in NY,” an annual juried show of artists who live and work in New York State, will open at 5 p.m. Friday, March 22, at the Schweinfurth Art Center, 205 Genesee St., Auburn.
A total of 280 artists submitted 516 pieces for review by jurors Marie Via, former director of exhibitions at Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, and Anne Novado, director of Novado Gallery in Jersey City, NJ. They picked 75 artworks from 60 artists to include in the show.
“Made in NY is a great showcase for the talented and diverse artists we have in our region and statewide. And it is always one of the most popular with our audience,” said Donna Lamb, executive director.
One of the more unusual pieces is by artist Margaret VanArsdale, of Perry, who submitted “34th and 8th,” an image of a street scene using plastic bags. “My artwork made from plastic bags came about after assigning my students a ‘yarn painting’ project,” VanArsdale said. “I was fooling around with a candy wrapper and the idea was instant. So for over 10 years, I have been producing large colorful textured images out of plastic bags.”
Once the show is hung, the jurors will pick prize winners, including a $1,000 Best of Show award. Here are the western suburb artists participating in “Made in NY 2019”:

In addition to “Made in NY,” the Schweinfurth is hosting two additional exhibits. Married artists Pennie Brantley and Robert Morgan will display their paintings of places in Argentina, Italy, the Netherlands, and other locales, including their backyard, in “Double Vision.” The exhibition with be in the Schweinfurth’s second-floor Davis Family Gallery.
The exhibition “Common Places” will feature pieces by art photographer Willson Cummer. His photographs show landscapes of public or “common” spaces in DeWitt, Fayetteville, and Manlius. The show will be on display in Gallery Julius.
The opening reception for all three exhibitions will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 22, at the Schweinfurth. “Made in NY” prizes will be announced at 6 p.m. Also at the opening, visitors can enter to win a wine-themed gift basket with an estimated value of $250. The reception is free and open to the public.
Two “Made in NY” artists will be offering demonstrations of their methods during the run of the exhibition.
- Stefan Zoller, of Henrietta, will demonstrate a variety of techniques that he uses with various acrylic paints as well as some image transfer techniques at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 27.
- Sally Hootnick, of Manlius, will demonstrate various hot and cold encaustic techniques using her unusual tools at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 11.
Both demonstrations are free with exhibit admission, but registration is required. People can register by calling 315.255.1553 or emailing info@schweinfurthartcenter.org.
Exhibit admission costs $7 per person, with Schweinfurth members, participating artists, and children 12 and under free. The exhibits will be on display from March 22 through May 12, 2019. The galleries are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.
