Share in the Passion of Creating with Clay at Pottery Festival

The 12th annual Western New York Pottery Festival will take place June 15 and 16, 2024 from 10 4 p.m. each day at Studio Sales Pottery in Avon, NY. Walk the grounds to view ceramic works for sale from over 25 national and local professional clay artists. This is a competitive juried event of exceptional quality. WNY Pottery Festival is both an opportunity for artists to display and sell their creations, and a chance to share the making process with the public through live demonstrations and interactive opportunities. Want to know how something is made? Come watch for yourself or ask the artists in person.

On Saturday, the festival will feature the 2nd annual Young Mudslingers event that will involve local high school students joining together in some friendly competitions. The winning district will be bringing a brand new Shimpo VL Lite potter’s wheel back to their school! This is not only a chance to get young adults fired up about the craft, but to share this excitement with our patrons. This event will run from 10:15am- 2:00pm with a break from 12-1pm. The winners will be announced at the conclusion of the event on Saturday.

Also, on Saturday at noon, Potter and Studio Sales owner, Mike Carroll will be unveiling the 12th annual wood kiln firing. This involves an explanation of the firing process and the opportunity to share the opening of the kiln with festival patrons. Works from the firing will be available for purchase by the public that day.

On Sunday, participating artists will be taking part in demonstrations starting at 10am. Witness throwing, hand-building and surface treatment demonstrations by your favorite artist. Spectators may ask questions during the presentations and get a up close view of how it is done.

Ongoing activities during the festival include “glaze you own raku pot” Cost is $20 per pot and includes your choice of glaze that you apply yourself. The pots will be fired on premise while you watch, and you can take home that day. Raku firing is a process in which ceramic pieces are placed in a kiln, brought to temperature to flux the glaze then pulled out while still hot and placed in combustible material to smoke the exposed surfaces. It is an exiting process that has been a part of festivals at Studio Sales for over 20 years! A potter’s wheel will also be available under limited supervision for patrons to try it.

A raffle will be taking place throughout the weekend for works from the participating artists and winners will be drawn shortly after the festival ends on Sunday.
