Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn – Youth Classes, Call to NYS Artists

The Schweinfurth Art Center is offering in-person student art classes and camps starting next month. Parents are encouraged to sign up their children right away as space is limited and classes fill up quickly.

Artist Victoria Savka will be teaching two sessions of Art Camp during the school’s February break, Feb. 21 to 25, 2022. Savka is a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology’s Master of Science for Teachers, Bachelors in Fine Arts (BFA) in Illustration, and BFA in Fine Arts Studio. She taught elementary art within the Diocese of Rochester before moving to Auburn.

“Exploring the World of Animals,” for students ages 6 to 10, will meet 9 a.m. to noon at the art center. Students will explore animals, their environments, and myths and legends through clay, drawing, painting, and collage.

“The Art of Storytelling,” for students age 11 to 16, will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. at the art center. Participants will illustrate known or their own stories using clay, watercolors and, pencils, and create flipbooks to explore their characters.

Cost for each camp is $115 for Schweinfurth members, $130 for nonmembers. Scholarships are available; email julia@schweinfurthartcenter for more information.

The Schweinfurth’s Art After School program will return in March with a six-week program, “Ocean Life Exploration Through Art,” also taught by Victoria Savka. Students will work with paint, clay, printmaking, and drawing to explore penguins, the Great Barrier Reef, Jacques Cousteau’s work, and more.

The class, for students age 6 to 10, will meet 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. Wednesdays from March 2 through April 6. Cost for the program is $55 for Schweinfurth members and $65 for nonmembers. Scholarships are available; email julia@schweinfurthartcenter for more information.

Schweinfurth issues call for NYS artists

The Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn is accepting applications for its annual Made in NY exhibition. The exhibit is open to all media, including photography, sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, fiber, installation, and video.

The exhibit is an opportunity for artists living in New York State to showcase their work in a competitive, juried exhibition. Prizes will be awarded, including $1,000 for Best of Show. Jurors are Ellen Blalock, Gina Murtagh, and Kim Waale.

Applicants can submit two pieces for consideration in the show. The entry fee is $5 for Schweinfurth members and $35 for nonmembers, which includes membership through December 2022.
