Plant and Bake Sale at the Three Bears

It’s growing season, and everything is bursting out in glory in Ovid.

Not just the annuals and perennials of the Friends of the Three Bears annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale on May 11, but an acknowledgment of the restoration efforts being continued on the historic three building courthouse property located at 7175 Main Street.

Seneca County manager Kyle Lovell and Ovid supervisor Joe Borst will be on hand at 11:30 a.m., May 11, for a quick overview of the next steps being planned in 2024 for the cupola and bell tower, and a recap of last year’s accomplishments – in particular, the installation of an elevator in Papa Bear.

With help from Countryside Market in Interlaken, Stoltzfus Market & Blackduck Cidery in Ovid, and the Cayuga Wine Trail, the plant sale from 9 to 11 a.m. will feature a wide variety of perennials, annuals, fruit tree and bushes, hanging baskets and house plants. Kids can make a gift for mom during the sale. All sale proceeds benefit the preservation and utilization of the historic Courthouse Complex.

And if the aroma of flowers isn’t enough, the Friends’ Annual Bake Sale – also May 11- will be wafting home cooked smells with treats from the best bakers in and around Ovid. Take a cookie platter or fresh bread to mom on May 12. New this year – a Cookie Contest! Purchase a dozen cookies – 2 of each from 6 bakers – and vote for your favorite cookie. The Cookie Contest Winner will receive a hanging basket. Email the Friends: to enter the Cookie Contest by May 8, or to reserve a dozen cookies for purchase.

And finally enjoy a free performance of the a cappella group, So Noted, in the restored 1845 courtroom from 12 to 1 p.m. on May 11.
