Dansville ArtWorks Mural Committee is proud to share upcoming events for their Granula Mural project. The mural will be placed on the north-facing wall of Sunrise Restaurant (owned by the Mitrousis family), which is a highly visible site in Dansville, New York’s historic business district. This project is made possible with funds from the Aid to Localities Program through the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts and the New York State Senate, as well as generous private donors. Josi Opolentisima of Rochester, New York is the muralist.
The public is welcome to participate in any or all of the mural events, which will be held at Sunrise Restaurant, 188 Main Street, Dansville. Convenient free parking is available in the municipal lot behind Sunrise, accessible from Elizabeth Street.
· Thursday, July 16, 2026; 7-8pm: Artist Talk: Meet and listen to Josi Opolentisima, the creator of the Granula Mural. Josi will share her background as an artist and what inspired her design of the Granula Mural. The program opens with historian Jane Oakes, who will impart the story of granula in Dansville. A question and answer period follows Josi’s presentation. This event will be held in Sunrise’s private dining room.
· Saturday, July 18, 2026; 10-11am: Dansville Granula Mural Community Paint Day: Who wants to help paint the Dansville Granula Mural? Contribute to this project by painting a small section of our newest public artwork. Those 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult. All supplies provided. Dress accordingly. Rain date: Sunday, July 19; 10-11am (will be posted on Dansville ArtWorks’ Facebook page).
· Saturday, August 8, 2026; 10:30am: Dansville Granula Mural Dedication and Dansville Area Historical Society Historical Marker Presentation – Granula: Celebrate the dedication of the Dansville Granula Mural, followed by DAHS’s unveiling of the Granula Historical Marker. Light refreshments will be served post-dedication, including “granola from the source” — generously donated by The Dansville Granola Company (dansvillegranola.com; 156 Main Street, Dansville). Should it rain, the celebration will be held in the Holden Room at the Dansville Public Library.
Dansville ArtWorks’ Mural Committee intends to place additional historically relevant murals in Dansville. Chair Julee Acomb highlights the continued interest of downtown building owners and the mural committee’s dedication to the mission as key factors driving this public art initiative. “All have a love for their community and see a vibrant downtown as a must-have for the health and wellbeing of the village and town.” Contributions to support future murals may be made to Dansville ArtWorks Inc., PO Box 741, Dansville NY 14437; please note Mural on the memo line.
