There is something truly special about historic lake cottages. They’re places where generations gather, memories are made and traditions are passed down. This Canandaigua Lake property is one of those rare treasures.
The current owners, Bob and Kathy, share deep family roots in both the home and the surrounding community. Kathy’s family history in Canandaigua dates back to the mid-1800s, when her great-grandfather was one of the three Sterling brothers who emigrated from Scotland and settled in the area. Her mother later grew up in Canandaigua, swimming at Kershaw’s swimming school in the 1930s, and returning to the region after the passing of her father, William Patton, longtime owner of the Canandaigua Daily Messenger. Family holidays were often spent at the historic Hathaway Farm at Hathaway Corners – now the site of the bank on Route 332 – which further strengthened their connection to the area.

When Kathy’s parents were finally able to purchase their own “cottage,” they chose a property with sweeping lake views and deeded lake access. After nearly 20 summers there, they discovered this special lakefront property and began transforming it to better serve their growing family.
When Bob and Kathy later purchased the cottage, they set out to make it their own. With Bob’s background in real estate development and Kathy’s creativity and attention to detail, the home evolved into a one-of-a-kind Canandaigua Lake retreat. Kathy worked closely with the construction team throughout the process, coordinating daily and collaborating constantly with Bob to bring their vision to life.
One feature they never wanted to compromise was the spectacular 180-degree lake views, set within a peaceful cove that offered long, north-facing vistas down the lake. They envisioned open-concept living, a permanent dock and an expansive waterfront experience. When their daughter shared her dream of getting married on the dock, Bob designed a custom platform atop the boat lift. This created a breathtaking wedding venue that accommodated guests across the dock and surrounding waterfront deck.
To further enhance the resort-style feel, Bob and Kathy built a full-length waterfront deck, offering ample space for relaxing and entertaining. For a touch of fun, they added a putting green. Kathy’s passion for gardening shines with vibrant landscaping and blueberry bushes that have become favorites of visiting grandchildren.

Inside, the home was reimagined to create a spacious great room with a fireplace, open to a chef’s kitchen featuring custom cherry cabinetry and an expanded dining area perfect for large family gatherings. The original cottage layout was thoughtfully transformed: The former first-floor bedroom became the dining room, the original kitchen was converted into a home office and the screened porch now serves as a comfortable living room. Upstairs, what was once two bedrooms and a small bunk room has been expanded into four bedrooms, including a stunning primary bedroom with cathedral ceilings and a private balcony that showcases elevated lake views.
Holidays at the lake are especially memorable. From this remarkable vantage point, the family enjoys not only nearby waterfront fireworks, but also views of the Kershaw Park display, the iconic “Ring of Fire,” and fireworks from Lake House and country club weddings throughout the season.
For decades, this home has been shaped by stewardship, vision and love, evolving with each generation while preserving the magic of lake living. It is truly a special “Chosen Place,” filled with history, heart and unforgettable memories.
