CEO Chelsey Kingsley sheds light on the importance of the company’s newfound status
Kingsley Quality Woodworking (KQW), based out of Ithaca, New York, was recently certified as a New York State Women-Owned Business Enterprise. KQW is the only upstate company certified for custom architectural woodwork and millwork manufacturing. The certification of KQW as a manufacturer enables companies, institutions and government agencies who work with KQW to receive 100 percent credit toward their diversity spending mandates. For example, if a company purchases KQW products worth $10,000, $10,000 goes toward meeting its diversity spending needs; this is in contrast to purchasing the same materials from a company certified as a supplier where only 60 percent or $6,000 of that purchase would be credited.
CEO Chelsey Kingsley said: “We’re doing what we can to be the solution to diversity spending challenges for contractors, developers and builders whose projects must spend up to 30 percent of the budget with Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises. We’re also working to keep these spending dollars and jobs in the upstate economy.”
The next step for KQW is to connect with the leaders working on such projects and get the word out about the scope of their products, materials and services. Hardwood flooring, trim packages, chair rail, paneling, and S4S lumber are some of the very common components needed for projects, and KQW is hoping, a very simple way to contribute to the complex diversity spending equation.
Chelsey Kingsley added: “There are less than 40 Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises in Tompkins County. This means that companies often have to look outside of the region to meet their diversity spending goals. People lose out on the relationships and convenience of getting to work within the local network and can incur additional costs from working with out-of-area companies.”
