Since its beginnings in 1991, the GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance has sought to inspire positive change in communities through the communal celebration of world music, art and dance. What began as a sold out one night benefit to raise money for the fight against AIDS at the historic State Theatre in Ithaca, NY has evolved into four annual weekend long events in Trumansburg, New York, Shakori Hills, North Carolina and Miami, Florida, inspiring generations of music lovers young and old to come together through the sharing of cross cultural experiences to better the world. This feels like one of those times where all of this matters the most.
This year as the world has all confronted the COVID-19 pandemic, for the first time in its 30 year history, an entire year of GrassRoots Festivals has had to be postponed in order to all stay safe. Now as the non-profit organization puts together multiple potential plans to come together safely and joyfully once again, they are asking for the community’s support to help them get there. Without the majority of this year’s festival revenue, in order to keep the lights on through the winter and prepare for the 2021 season, GrassRoots has launched Save Your Roots, a capital campaign with a goal to raise $100,000 that will culminate with a very special live streamed event from the State Theatre in Ithaca, NY on December 19, 2020 at 7 PM ET.
Hosted by Yes Darling (Ryan Montbleau & Hayley Jane), featuring live performances by the GrassRoots All-Stars, Jeb & Tara of Donna the Buffalo, Driftwood, Richie & Rosie and appearances from Jim Lauderdale, Preston & Keith Frank, Keith Secola, Dirk Powell, Cortadito, Fabi World Music & more, Save Your Roots GrassRoots Live will be focused on bringing GrassRoots magic to people’s living rooms to lift spirits and share in music & dance after an entire year without it.
