To kick things off, Geneva Theatre Guild (GTG) will present the intimate “In Their Own Words: An Evening With Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost.” Eleanor Stearns, longtime member of the GTG Board, and local thespian Pete Saracino will present original monologues in the voices of these immortal poets. “In Their Own Words” will run December 1-3, 2023. Venue and showtimes will be announced at a later date.
Following the success of last season’s “Women of a Certain Age” by area artist and director Steve Duprey, GTG will present Duprey’s companion piece, “Men of a Certain Age.” Four men in their sixties reunite in their old hangout, a cabin in the woods, to play cards, eat wings and complain about the joys of aging. But a new romantic partner for one of them – a much younger woman – shakes their friendship and puts their long bond to the ultimate test. “Men of a Certain Age” will present at the Pat Collins Black Box Theatre at the Geneva Community Center from February 22-24, 2024 at 7:30 PM, with a final matinee performance on February 25, 2024 at 2 PM. Audition notices will be posted soon.
In the spring, GTG will stage its annual Playwrights Play Readings Festival. Since the program’s inception in 1998, GTG has welcomed submissions of short original plays from both the local Finger Lakes area and across the country, and presented selected favorites in staged readings, giving playwrights an opportunity to workshop and local audiences access to new and developing work. You can expect announcements about this year’s submission guidelines and deadline toward the end of 2023, and dates, venue, and showtimes for performances announced in the first quarter 2024.
Finally, GTG will close their 46th season with a new musical endeavor: GTG Main Stage and summer Youth Theatre programs will unite to present the new classic musical, “Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical,” directed by local director Elizabeth Tuxill. Inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, this is the Tony Award-winning masterpiece from the Royal Shakespeare Company that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life. GTG is thrilled to invite area artists of all ages to audition for one epic summer musical, and “Matilda” is the perfect show to bring them all together. Audition times, show dates and venue will be announced in the first quarter of 2024. “Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com
