Expand your skills with fiber workshops

08/18/2022

Fiber artists are invited to join three weekend workshops at the Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn, New York, this fall. Two of the workshops are taught by nationally known artists, while the third is a retreat with like-minded artists to work on your own pieces.

“Two of the workshops are taught by artists who are well known in their field, and the third brings together artists who can share their ideas and knowledge,” said Program Director Davana Robedee. “Attendees come away with new skills and inspiration to take their art-making in a new direction.”

All three workshops will be held at the Schweinfurth Art Center, 205 Genesee St., Auburn:

Joomchi & Beyond: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 9-11, 2022
In this workshop taught by artist Jiyoung Chung, students will explore Joomchi, a unique Korean traditional way of making textured handmade paper using water and eager hands. Students will discover its history, practice and role in Korean society, as well as learning hands-on techniques. Reinterpreted adaptations can be turned into surface design, collage, new ways of drawing, sculptures, or wearable, unconventional body ornaments.
Cost is $400 for Schweinfurth members, $410 for nonmembers

Shibori for Quilts and Piecing: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 28-30, 2022
Students will explore three techniques to create modular pieces and lengths of silk and cellulose: Arashi pole wrapping; Katano sewing machine resist, where the stitching acts like a clamp; and Itajime folding and clamping with blocks. Students will use fiber reactive indigo dye thickened and in immersion to resist scour silk organza to create areas of stiff and lustrous patterns. The class is taught by artist Ana Lisa Hedstrom.
