Virtual Event – In this workshop with former artist in residence Stacey Rowe, you’ll be exploring pop culture, the rise of social media, memes, and Internet phrases. Learn to elevate them to a fine piece you’ll be proud to upload to Instagram! Participants are encouraged to do a little homework in preparation for the workshop. Gather some photo references or do a preliminary sketch. Think of a current meme, image, or popular phrase; or perhaps political or environmental issues are more up your alley. Pick something topical that speaks to you and figure out why. How could you transform it and make it more representative of you while also being relatable to others? What will this piece say about these “unprecedented times?”
While we work, we’ll chat about Andy Warhol and the pop art movement; as well as the lowbrow (pop surrealist) movement in L.A. (all taking place in the late 60s), high kitsch a la Jeff Koons, and today’s pop contemporaries such as Trenton Doyle Hancock and Ashley Longshore. Of course, we can chat about my work and the pop influences and humor that inspire it.
