The 1960s were a turbulent time in America. And it produced some of the most memorable music the world has ever heard. The generation born in the years just after WWII grew up to oppose, or fight in, the war that began two decades later; simmering issues of civil rights in society bubbled to the surface and boiled over into the streets. Women, seeking and gaining liberation both financially and sexually, announced their own independence. And societal norms of all sorts were being called into question and openly defied.
Through it all, the popular music of the time reflected what was going on, the good and the bad, the hopeful and mournful, the anger, the fear, the joy and the love. In this program that combines music history with US history, Gathering Time performs the songs that became classic, and informs the audience how they came to be, the hidden meanings therein, and the stories of the musicians who wrote and sang them.
NY-based trio Gathering Time are an Internationally touring folk-rock harmony Americana trio in the spirit of the ’60s and beyond, playing originals, classic 20th-century and traditional folk, all with great 3-part vocals. Stuart Markus, Christine Sweeney and Gerry McKeveny evince deep roots in ’60s folk-rock, with a healthy dash of traditional folk in the mix. Their stage chemistry makes clear that they take the music (if not themselves) very seriously, yet their infectious energy wins over even fans who never considered themselves folkies. Expect a very feel-good afternoon with maybe a touch of nostalgia for some but brought up to date with the acoustic-electric alchemy created by the three members of Gathering Time.
