“STATION MASTER: John W. Jones of Elmira N.Y.” is on view in the Reading Room until 8 October 2023.

The exhibition includes the newly painted portraits of John W. Jones and Harriet Jacobs, both born into slavery in the early 1800s, as well as the stories of their independent paths to freedom. Also on display are period-relevant artifacts borrowed from the Chemung Historical Society, including a book written in Jones’s own hand.

Gallery Hours:  Tuesday – Friday, 10am – 5pm; Saturday, Noon-5pm. Closed Sunday, Monday and Holidays.

Admission:  $7 per person, free to those under 18. Admission is always free to Museum Members!

Directions:  Exit 56 from Route 17/86 (Church Street Exit). Turn left at the forth traffic signal onto Lake Street. Free parking is available in the Museum parking lot at the rear of the building, bordering Baldwin Street.
