“Shining a Light on St. Mary’s Cemetery,” the 2017 “Illuminated History” cemetery presentation at 7:00 pm on June 13 at the Fairport Museum (18 Perrin St.) will feature stories of some of the many immigrants who made Fairport their home and are now St. Mary’s “eternal residents.”
One of them, Benedetto Ansuini (1893-1971), was a member of the “Lost Battalion” in the Argonne Wood during World War I. He was one of only 194 of the roughly 554 men who came out alive after being surrounded by enemy forces.
In addition to Ansuini’s, other stories presented will highlight early merchants who opened businesses in the early-to-mid 1900s on North Main Street. Among them are the proprietor of the Fairport Hotel, a grocer, an active community member and owner of a leather goods store, and a teamster for the DeLand Co.
Volunteer actors, who will be portraying these and other of St. Mary’s “eternal residents,” include: MaryAnn Cady, Ed Currier, Nancy Matthews Currier, Wes Harris, Anne Johnston, Suzanne Lee, Lucy McCormick, Dave Scheirer, Sue Scheirer, and Doug Whitney.
