Once in the early 1980s, and then again in 2016, the country was stricken with a plague of phantom clown sightings. These terrifying apparitions were reported to menace children from a distance, shout abuse at people of all ages, and even attack innocent bystanders. What provoked these twin spates of brightly-colored terror? Is some insidious force at work, resulting in the appearance of dastardly jesters every three decades?
