Out of the Attic is a special lunchtime lecture series at the Cayuga Museum. The series will feature local experts who have selected a few objects from the Cayuga Museum’s vast collection to anchor their historical discussions. Bring a bag lunch, and learn more about the unique history of Cayuga County! These lectures will take place in the Carriage House Theater. Parking is available in a lot adjacent to the Carriage House on Orchard Ave, and in front of the museum on Genesee Street.
Sharon Burkel is President of the Historic Batavia Cemetery and Member of the City of Batavia’s Historic Preservation Commission, a number of historical societies, along with a deep appreciation of architecture, history and the arts. Don Burkel is the President of the Holland Land Office Museum in Batavia, Member of the American Battlefield Trust and Central Virginia Battlefields Trust, various historical societies and art groups.
Their lecture, The Angel and the Warrior: The Love Story of Emily Martin & General Emory Upton, explores the letters and diary of Emily Norwood Martin and General Emory Upton as the two scholars will tell their brief, yet tragic, story of their life together. It relates to their courtship, the Martin & Upton families, Willowbrook, and the various locations in the country where Emily and Emory resided throughout their time together. A Powerpoint program provides visuals and other details to go along with the readings.
