Celebrate the 19th amendment by learning how “Great Graphics Helped Women Get the Vote.” The program will be on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 2:00 pm in the Geneva History Museum, 543 S. Main Street, Geneva. The program is free and open to the public. Those attending must wear masks. Attendees are invited to wear one or more suffrage colors – gold, purple and white. A virtual option is also being offered. See last paragraph.

The speakers will be Walter Gable and Norma Press, members of the Antiques Club of the Finger Lakes, sponsor of the program in association with Historic Geneva. Norma and Walt will illustrate and discuss the ways graphics were skillfully used to identify and promote the suffrage movement that led to the approval of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution on August 26, 1920.

Suffragists created hundreds of items to promote their cause. See and hear how they used graphics with defined colors, symbols and slogans on posters, buttons, jewelry, sheet music, magazines, umbrellas, window hangers, banners, pennants, clothing and more.

Walt Gable is Historian of Seneca County, a popular speaker and the author of numerous books and articles. He regularly writes about Seneca County history for the Finger Lakes Times. Norma Press is the author of “Votes for Women: Woman Suffrage Movement Inspires Hooked Rugs” for Rug Hooking Magazine. Norma will display hooked rugs inspired by suffrage graphics and discuss rug hooking as a means of women’s independence.

Anyone who wishes to attend the program virtually through Zoom must register ahead of time. To register, see the calendar on the Historic Geneva website. The necessary login information will be sent to registrants via email 24 hours prior to the program.

For any problems with registration or to register by phone, call the Historic Geneva office at 315-789-5151. Registrations must be complete before 5:00 pm, January 21, the day before the program.
