“Flying the Flag: A Fairport Tradition” A photo exhibit “Flying the Flag: A Fairport Tradition” will run from May 23 through July 30 at the Fairport Historical Museum, 18 Perrin Street, during regular museum hours. In 2008, Fairport photographer Keith Boas began an assignment to illustrate the calendar, Front Porches of Fairport, for the year 2010. Over the next 10 months, Keith walked the streets of the village with his camera, recording images of homes which struck him as being front-porch friendly. He later realized that many of the images contained the U.S. flag, the bold red, white and blue colors of the flag jumping out and commanding attention. More than 75 of Boas’ photos featuring the flag in Fairport and surrounding Perinton hamlets form the centerpiece of the exhibit which also contains pictorial images of the flags at the Potter Mansion and Veterans Memorial, Perinton Center Stage, and other public venues. Visitors also will see several vintage photos featuring the flag from the archives of the Perinton Historical Society and Town of Perinton. Within the exhibit’s time period, there are three patriotic holidays—Memorial Day, Flag Day and Independence Day—each appropriately symbolized by our country’s flag.

Boas has been taking pictures of scenic New York State since his college days when he worked summers as a postcard photographer in the Adirondacks. After earning a fine arts degree at RIT, he joined Kodak where he produced travelogues, calendars, how-to books and promotional literature. His 35 year career at Kodak also included being director of its publications department and manager of its professional products worldwide marketing communications group. Currently, he freelances and focuses much of his time on the landscape and landmarks along the Erie Canal. His photos have appeared on the covers of magazines, annual reports and catalogs, and in ads for tourist related businesses along the canal.
