Learn more about keys and locks at a program on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2:00 p.m. at the Geneva History Museum, 543 S. Main Street, Geneva. The speaker, Ethan Fogg, will discuss “Keys & Locks as Tools and Collectibles.” The program is presented by the Antiques Club of the Finger Lakes and is free and open to the public.

Join in the conversation about why we have locks and keys and how their use determines their design. Ethan will show how the uses and technologies of locks and keys have changed over time. He will explain how locks work and what keys actuate them. You will learn what to do if you buy an item such as furniture or padlock or even a house that’s missing a key.

Have you ever been interested in a cigar box of old keys at a yard sale? Ethan will explain what to look for in terms of design, material, brand, etc. Perhaps you have your own cigar box of unidentified keys. You will learn how to determine if your keys are valuable or rare.

A native of the Finger Lakes, Ethan Fogg is Executive Director of the Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce. He confesses, “My key collecting started when I was little and I locked my parents out of several pieces of antique furniture. They gave me my own set of keys as a diversion, and I’m still collecting almost fifty years later.”

There will be a display of locks and keys for the audience to see and handle.
