On Friday, May 1, 2015 at 7pm, at the First Unitarian Society of Ithaca, the Finger Lakes Finns will host a concert of Sibelius compositions, performed by Finnish mezzo-soprano, Riikka Paasikivi, and Finlandia Foundation National’s 2013 and 2014 Performer of the Year – concert pianist Marja Kaisla. The concert is open to the public and will include fifteen of Jean Sibelius’ works. A reception with refreshments will immediately follow.

The concert is just one of many national and international celebrations of the Sibelius 150 Jubilee. According to the Sibelius150.org website, “The year 2015 will mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Events during the jubilee year will include the XI International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition, an international conference for Sibelius scholars, and the annual Sibelius festivals.

Jean Sibelius (8.12.1865–20.9.1957) is far more than the composer of seven symphonies, a violin concerto, Finlandia and Valse triste – he also wrote a wealth of chamber music suitable for musicians both young and old, songs, and music for different types of choirs. His tone poems and music for the stage add variety to the concert programmes of symphony orchestras.”

The Finger Lakes Finns is organized to promote cultural and educational appreciation of Finnish heritage and customs, to provide a social setting for enjoying old and new friendships in the Finnish tradition, and to pursue charitable community activities. Interested community members are invited to our monthly programs. Please visit our website for more information: www.fingerlakesfinns.org This concert is made possible in part by a grant from Finlandia Foundation National. The concert is FREE, but donations to the Finger Lakes Finns will be greatly appreciated.
