Erie Canal Museum Debuts New Event Series

Wednesdays at the Weighlock

The Erie Canal Museum is kicking off a new series of events called Wednesdays at the Weighlock on September 14, 2016 from 5 to 8 p.m. Future events will be held on October 12, November 9, and December 14, 2016.

Grab all your fun-loving friends and swing by the Erie Canal Museum for a different activity each month. Support the museum while hanging out in one of Syracuse’s most unique building. Ticket price includes entrance into the museum and access to all exhibits, in addition to the evening’s activities. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit eriecanalmuseum.org/watw.

The inaugural event in September is called Trivia Pursuits on the Yellow Fellow. Fresh off of a successful run at the Great New York State Fair, the Yellow Fellow is heading to the Erie Canal Museum for an action packed night of trivia. Participants will board the Yellow Fellow, bonding with their fellow peddlers, as they make their way around the block for 10-minute trivia cram sessions. Groups will then compete in a fast-paced trivia game to test what they learned. The event will also include live music by Buddhish and a cash bar.

For October, the museum has Eerie Canal Costumes, Candle Light, and Zombies. This is your chance to explore the 1850 Syracuse Weighlock Building with only candle light to lead the way. Don your favorite “eerie” costume, taste delicious samples of food and drink from local producers, and, perhaps, see something otherworldly.

Beer Week: Taste & Talk with Don Cazentre is in November. Are you curious about the history of beer in the Syracuse area or the state of local craft beers? Head on over to the Erie Canal Museum to hear Don Cazentre of the Syracuse Media Group discuss the State of Craft Beer and to try samples delicious New York State beer. This event is part of Syracuse Beer Week.

For December, enjoy Gingerbread Build & Sip. Perhaps you’ve heard of the popular “Paint & Sip” events. Well, this is the Erie Canal Museum version! While surrounded by the incredible creations in the 31st Annual Gingerbread Gallery, you will have a chance to create your own masterpiece! All supplies will be provided (graham crackers, icing, candies, etc.). Ticket price includes one glass of wine (or beer/cider).

Tickets for each event are $15 for Museum members and $25 for the general public. All non-members who purchase general public tickets will be given a one-year Erie Canal Museum membership, which can be used when purchasing tickets for future events. Ticket price includes entrance into the Museum and access to all exhibits, in addition to the evening’s activities.

All proceeds from Wednesdays at the Weighlock support ongoing programs at the Erie Canal Museum.

The Erie Canal Museum shares 200 years of Erie Canal history through interactive displays, hands-on exhibits, narrative audio tracks and original artifacts. It includes a full-size replica canal boat, exhibits about Erie Canal commerce and communities, the award-winning Locktender’s Garden and the 1850 National Register Weighlock Building. Admission is free with a $5 suggested donation. Hours are Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the exception of major holidays. The museum is a member of the Council of American Maritime Museums and home to the Syracuse Heritage Area Visitor Center. The museum is partially funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
