Thirty years ago we started a small timber frame company. Today, along with our sister company Pioneer Millworks, we employ nearly 120 designers, timberwrights, engineers, craftspeople, and community members. Together, we design and build some of the most lyrical and efficient timber frames in the industry, using reclaimed timbers, environmentally responsible practices, and state-of-the-art technology and software. Our clients hail from the Finger Lakes Region and beyond. Our clients’ dreams, wants, and needs are as diverse as their locations. Their common thread is love of fine wood, elegant design, and quality craft. We invite you to choose from our services, incorporating as much or as little into your project as you see fit.

The owners of this lakeside retreat enjoyed the original farmhouse here for many years. When it become apparent that their beloved lake house was beyond repair, they made the bittersweet decision to deconstruct it in favor of a new home. The land, the lake, and home’s impact here was a driving force in the design. From the road, the home is quaint and charming, from the lake the home opens up to take in the views. From site planning and design thru construction and completion, this home reflects the level of craftsmanship we’re known for — quality and an attention to detail that will outlast many, many generations to come. Creating a home with reclaimed timbers can have its own challenges; finding pieces without old mortise pockets or pegs in the wrong spot; getting lengths to span the necessary widths and more. Industrial salvaged timber, such as the Douglas fir used for this lake home, celebrates nail holes, ferrous staining, and rich color. The home has unmatched history as its bones and includes modern energy efficient components such as passive solar design, advanced enclosure and mechanical systems, FSC certified and reclaimed wood flooring and siding, EnvrioShake recycled roofing, and a geothermal heat system. Timber framing utilizes traditional mortise and tenon joinery held in place with hardwood pegs. On average 20% less wood is used in a timber frame than conventional framing. It is a highly efficient and eco-friendly construction method, with longevity well beyond other building types. New Energy Works Timberframers often uses reclaimed and salvaged industrial or agricultural timbers. Beyond the positive ecological impact, reclaimed timbers offer stability, signs of previous life including bolt holes, ferrous staining, and deep patina.

Well designed houses make room for life changes. They adapt, age, and grow with their inhabitants. We are one of the few timberframe companies with our own in-house architectural design department. If you already have an architect – or are one – we will collaborate to incorporate the nuances of timber framing and post and beam in your project. If you already have a builder – or are one – we can do the same.

The
NEWwoodworks group crafts interior and exterior doors in a variety of species. If you feel investing in a custom home is not just a matter of style but a statement about your values, then you are probably already thinking about the effect your choice of trim can have on the overall quality of your project. You may wish to consider a unique craftsman-built door in your specifications, as the perfect highlight to an entrance-way.
We General Contract a select number of projects every year; those we take on are usually within 70 miles of our Farmington headquarters. From foundation, to timber frame, to enclosure, and landscaping we build the home to the exact specifications reviewed and developed early on in the design process. Often custom cabinetry crafted by NEWwoodworks and reclaimed flooring, paneling, or timbers provided by Pioneer Millworks find new life in our general contract projects.
