Choosing Peace, One Breath at a Time

By Laura Ponticello

There is something about the Finger Lakes Region that naturally invites reflection.

Maybe it is the quiet beauty of the lakes in the early morning hours. The peaceful trails that wind through local parks and nature preserves. Or the way sunlight settles across the trees before the pace of the day fully begins. Here in Central New York, there are still moments that gently remind us to slow down long enough to reconnect with ourselves—and with one another.

Recently, during the quiet onset of day, I found myself sitting with a simple question:

What would it mean to consciously choose peace today?

Not peace tied to circumstances or headlines. Not peace that depends on the outside world becoming perfect. But peace as a daily practice—something cultivated within our own hearts, homes, and communities.

We are living in a time when many people feel overwhelmed by uncertainty, division, constant information, and the pressure to move faster than our minds and spirits were ever designed to move. Yet even amidst that, there remains an opportunity to pause. To breathe. To return inward and remember what truly matters.

For me, that grounding often begins in nature.

As a writer and storyteller rooted here in the Finger Lakes, I have always found clarity in the natural rhythms around us. Nature reminds us that healing is rarely rushed. Gardens bloom in their own timing. Water settles after storms. Trees remain rooted through changing seasons.

There is wisdom in that.

Peace, I have come to believe, is not passive. It is intentional. It is the choice to pause before reacting. The decision to meet another person with compassion instead of assumption. The willingness to stay grounded when fear and tension ask us to disconnect from ourselves and each other.

Sometimes peace looks very simple.

It may be stepping outside for one deep breath before beginning the day.
Sharing a smile with someone who may silently need it.
Sitting quietly with a warm cup of coffee before reaching for the phone.
Choosing kindness in a moment when frustration would feel easier.

These moments may seem small, but they matter more than we realize.

I often think of the words of John Lennon: “Imagine all the people living life in peace.”

What if peace begins not as something distant or political, but personal? What if it begins in the everyday choices we make within our families, workplaces, neighborhoods, and communities?

A held door.
A patient conversation.
A moment of grace.
A breath before speaking.

These quiet acts become ripples. And ripples, over time, shape culture.

Living in the Finger Lakes has taught me that community is built not only through large moments, but through presence, connection, and shared humanity. We may not control everything happening in the world around us, but we can choose the energy we bring into the spaces we enter each day.

Perhaps peace is not something we wait for someday.

Perhaps it is something we practice—one breath, one choice, one heart at a time.
