Meet Drone Photographer Stephen Kalbach
Farmington resident Stephen Kalbach specializes in drone photography, capturing landscapes and moments in time.
He bought his first drone – DJI Mavic 1 – in 2017. The next year, he received his FAA Part 107 drone license. From there, his photography career took off; he even used his drone while photographing weddings. “I fell in love with being able to see things from an elevated perspective without having to leave the ground,” he said.
“It is really unfortunate, but understandable, why you can’t fly a drone in a NYS State Park unless you have a special permit,” he said. “Otherwise I would be in a park every weekend during the fall.”
Kalbach’s favorite image is from the Ring of Fire Ceremony on Labor Day weekend on Bare Hill near Canandaigua Lake. “Even though this image is not during the ‘golden hour,’ it is so unique,” Kalbach said. He especially enjoys taking aerial pictures over bodies of water with landmarks in the frame.
I’m always trying to look for new and unique perspectives over everyday places,” he added.
