Three Curtiss Reproductions Fly Again

This video features three Curtiss aeroplane reproductions made by the Restoration Shop at the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, www.glennhcurtissmuseum.org, the 1914 Curtiss “America,” the first US Navy aeroplane, the 1911 Curtiss A-1 TRIAD Amphibian, and the 1913 Curtiss Model “E” Flying Boat.

Most recently completed, the reproduction “America” is modeled after the plane that was to make the first trans-Atlantic flight in 1914. That flight was canceled, however, due to the outbreak of WW-1. Instead, in 1919 the Curtiss NC-4, a larger, more powerful version of the “America” made the first trans-Atlantic flight, going from Newfoundland, to the Azores, to Spain, and then on to England.

All reproductions were powered by original Curtiss OX series V-8 engines that were made in the early 1900s, and all flights were made on Keuka Lake where Glenn Curtiss flew his aeroplanes nearly 100 years ago.
