Vintage Bathing Suit Exhibit –
FROM BLOOMERS TO BIKINIS
A new display featuring vintage bathing suits from 1900 through the 1970s, entitled “From Bloomers to Bikinis,” is open for viewing at the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum of early aviation and local history. The exhibit will be open until September 6.
Displays of men’s and women’s bathing suits that span the decades are featured, covering fun in the sun from the Victorian and Edwardian era to the mod swinging Seventies. The exhibit contains more than 30 suits and a wide variety of accessories in styles representing the first 80 years of the 20th Century.
Exhibit highlights include several suits made popular by celebrities such as silent film starlet Annette Kellerman, known as the “Million Dollar Mermaid.” Also featured are suits worn by Dorothy Lamour, who was seen in many Bob Hope and Bing Crosby Movies, Bridget Bardot, and Marilyn Monroe.
A display on The Elms Camp Girls will generate for local interest. The camp was located on the east side of Keuka Lake from 1961 to 1971.
The Curtiss Museum is located at 8419 State Route 54 in Hammondsport. Open Monday through Saturday (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), admission is $7.50 for adults, $6 for seniors, and $4.50 for ages 7-18. Children under 6 are free. Family rate (2 adults plus 2 or more children ages 7-18) is $20.00. Group rates for 10 or more are available.
