Canandaigua Lake Music Festival to run from August 17 to 28

The 2011 season of the Canandaigua Lake Music Festival celebrates the vibrant impact of folk music and storytelling traditions on classical music, with performances by an exciting roster of musical stars. From the Czech folk flavor of Dvorak’s String Sextet to the Spanish rhythms and Oriental flavors in Ravel’s Quartet in F, the folk spirit continues with the pioneering multi-genre cellist Mike Block (who has toured extensively with the Appalachia Waltz Trio and the Silk Road Project, and who has been acclaimed by Yo-Yo Ma as “the ideal musician of the 21st century”). Hailed as a “virtuoso soloist and a rhythm monster” (Darol Anger), Block’s fiery performances combine Appalachian fiddling to bluegrass to classical styles for an unprecedented concert experience.

Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Scholarships
 
The Business and Education Committee of the Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce announced that two local graduating seniors were awarded scholarships in the amount of $500 each. The 2010 Essay Scholarship Award was offered to only seniors who were further advancing their education. Students were asked to write an essay identifying the positive and negative aspects of living, playing and working in Schuyler County, and to provide solutions for the negative aspects.

Finger Lakes Museum Steps Up Fundraising Effort

The Finger Lakes Museum’s board of trustees announced that the project’s Founders Campaign is nearing the halfway mark in an endeavor to raise $1 million by December 31. The drive is a grassroots fundraising effort that is being used to finance operations at the former Branchport Elementary School, hire staff, and pay consultants for architectural and exhibit design services.
