TYKEs launches 14th season with Guess How Much I Love You
TYKEs (Theatre Young Kids Enjoy) opens its new season with Guess How Much I Love You from the world-renowned Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia. The show, which tours worldwide, is based on the award-winning book of the same name by Sam McBratney and illustrator Anita Jeram. The on-stage performance continues with a second story, also created by illustrator Anita Jeram, called I Love My Little Storybook. The production’s imaginative blend of evocative music, stunning visual effects and innovative puppetry have earned Mermaid Theatre international acclaim.
The show runs for one weekend only at the Hart Theater at the JCC, 1200 Edgewood Avenue in Rochester, NY. Show dates are:
Friday, November 17 at 12:30 p.m.
Saturday, November 18 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and

In the book Guess How Much I Love You, which has been translated into 53 languages and has sold over 28 million copies, Little Nutbrown Hare looks for the perfect words to tell his dad just how much he loves him. He comes up with one idea after another. Even when his feelings stretch as long as his arms or as high as his hops, he is fondly one-upped by Big Nutbrown Hare, who can demonstrate his love with longer arms and higher hops. Their game goes on until Little Nutbrown Hare drifts off to sleep as Big Nutbrown Hare famously whispers, “I love you right up to the moon…and back!” – transforming this cleverly simple story into a nearly universally recognized way of saying “I love you” throughout the world. In I Love My Little Storybook, an eager bunny lies on the grass and opens his book filled with enchanted forests, magical unicorns, gentle lions and sleeping princesses. Within moments, the story comes alive in fascinating detail as an endearing celebration of the joy of reading.
“Most of TYKEs’ shows are created right here in town featuring talented local professional actors and local artists. But from time to time, we do like to bring in additional, extraordinary shows from other areas, including New York City. For almost ten years, I have so very much wanted to bring Mermaid Theatre here, and I’m overjoyed for Rochester audiences to see this astonishingly inventive performance,” explains TYKEs’ director and founder Freyda Schneider. “The puppets are of such incredible caliber, and there’s even a black light scene that I guarantee will dazzle every single audience member. I love to bring a bit of the international theatre scene here to town – just for one weekend!”
Continuing TYKEs’ 14th season will be Fly Guy: The Musical running January 13 to 21, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from February 5 to 10, and Madagascar – A Musical Adventure based on the Dreamworks motion picture from April 7 to 15. Subscriptions are available.
