20 Years of Twists & Turns

The 20th season of the Amazing Maize Maze in Macedon begins with the unveiling of the maze theme for 2017 – 20 Years of Twists and Turns. “We are very excited with this year’s theme,” states Joan Allen, owner, “because not only are we celebrating our 20th maze design, we are celebrating the 4th generation of family returning to the farm. This is duo-celebration is reflected in the maze design where each generation has their own maze within the big maze.”

The 5 acre corn field is divided into 4 quadrants each one representing an era of Long Acre Farm history. The windmill in the first gives tribute to Arthur and Dora Lawrence who established Long Acre Farms in the 1920’s. The second generation, Harlan and Charleen (Bunny) Lawrence were large cash crop farmer in the 1970’s and that is reflected in the rows of crops in the second quadrant. Doug Allen and Joan Lawrence Allen, the current owners of the farm are known for opening one of the first corn mazes in New York state in 1998 so what better way to celebrate that than with their own maze in the 3rd quadrant. Sarah Henning, returning to her family roots, represents the 4th generation. The question mark in the last section of the maze assures everyone that there will be more surprises down that road as the next generation brings new ideas to the farm. “It is interesting to note that each generation has had a unique vision for the farm that has allowed us to evolve, grow and stay in business,” adds Doug Allen. “We thought the maze would be a 5-year attraction and here we are still getting people lost 20 years later. I am excited to see where we are in another 20 years.”
